Focus is one of the most valuable skills you can teach your dog. It helps your dog learn to pay attention to you, even when there are distractions around them.
Whether you're out on a walk, meeting other dogs, or simply trying to teach a new behaviour, having your dog's attention makes training much easier.
Why does focus matter?
A focused dog is more likely to listen, respond to cues and make good choices. Building focus can also help strengthen the relationship between you and your dog because they learn that checking in with you is worthwhile.
Focus isn't about forcing your dog to look at you. It's about teaching them to choose to engage with you.
How can you build focus?
Start somewhere quiet with minimal distractions. Reward your dog whenever they voluntarily look towards you or check in with you. Gradually increase the distractions as your dog's focus improves.
Remember, focus is a skill that needs to be practiced. Short, regular sessions are often more effective than expecting your dog to concentrate for long periods.
A dog that learns to focus on their handler has a much better foundation for successful training in the real world.
