Are you insured?

A professional dog walker should, as a bare minimum, have public liability insurance and, preferably, have appropriate cover for the services they provide.

Are you DBS checked?

A DBS check can give you extra peace of mind, particularly if your dog walker will have access to your home.

What qualifications or experience do you have?

Experience with dogs is invaluable. Ask about their background, training and how long they have been working with dogs. Professional dog walking is not just about putting a lead on, going for a walk and hoping for the best. At the very least, any professional dog walker will have attended a Canine First Aid course within the last 3-5 years.

How many dogs do you walk at once?

Smaller groups often allow for more individual attention. I never walk more than two dogs together, helping me keep every dog safe and ensure they receive the attention they deserve.

What happens if my dog doesn't get on with another dog?

It's important to know how your dog walker manages introductions and handles any issues calmly and safely.

Will my dog be walked on or off lead?

Ask how this decision is made. A responsible dog walker should only allow off-lead exercise with your permission, where it is safe and legal, and when they are sure your dog will return to them.

What equipment do you use?

Your dog walker should be happy to explain what leads, harnesses or training equipment they use and why.

What happens in hot or bad weather?

Your dog's welfare should always come first. Check what guidelines the dog walker works to during extreme temperatures or severe weather, and what alternative enrichment will be offered in place of cancelled walks. For example, walks might be shortened, moved to cooler times of the day or be changed to garden visits with play.

What happens if my dog becomes ill or injured?

Ask what procedures are in place in an emergency and whether your dog walker would contact your vet if necessary.

Do you provide updates after the walk?
