What to Expect at Your Initial 1-to-1 Dog Training Consultation

Published on 12 July 2026 at 16:40

Starting dog training can feel a little daunting, especially if you've never worked with a trainer before. One of the questions I'm asked most often is, "What actually happens during the first session?"

The good news is there's no pressure, no judgement and no expectation that your dog will perform perfectly. The initial consultation is all about understanding you, your dog and your goals, so I can create a training plan that's tailored specifically for you and your dog.

Getting to Know You and Your Dog

Every dog is an individual, which is why I don't believe in a one-size-fits-all approach.

During our first meeting, we'll spend time discussing:

  • Your dog's age, breed and history.
  • Their daily routine and exercise.
  • Any previous training they've had.
  • Behaviours you're finding challenging.
  • What you'd like to achieve through training.

This conversation helps me understand not just the behaviour that’s worrying you, but why it may be happening.

Assessing Your Dog

I'll spend time observing your dog in their normal environment. This allows me to see how they naturally behave without putting them under unnecessary pressure.

Depending on your goals, I may look at things like:

  • Lead walking
  • Recall
  • Focus and engagement
  • Manners around people
  • Responses to everyday situations
  • Confidence levels

This isn't a test, and there’s no right or wrong at this stage. It's simply a starting point.

Practical Training

We'll begin introducing some simple exercises that are relevant to your dog's needs.

This may include:

  • Building engagement with you
  • Marker training
  • Introducing appropriate rewards and motivation
  • Improving communication
  • Teaching calm behaviour
  • The basics
  • Beginning loose lead walking or recall foundations

I'll explain why we're doing each exercise so you understand the purpose behind the training.

A Personalised Training Plan

Before I leave, you'll receive clear guidance on what to practice before the next session.

Rather than overwhelming you with lots of different exercises, I prefer to focus on a few key skills and help you build confidence. Small, consistent steps often produce the biggest long-term results.

You'll also receive practical advice on managing situations between sessions so your dog has the best chance of succeeding.

Training That Fits Your Lifestyle

Every household is different. Whether you have young children, work shifts or simply have limited time, your training plan needs to be realistic.

I'll tailor my advice to suit your lifestyle, because training only works if it's something you can comfortably fit into everyday life and real world situations.

Ask as Many Questions as You Like

The consultation isn't just about training your dog—it's also about giving you the knowledge and confidence to continue the training on your own.

You're welcome to ask questions throughout the session. I want to leave you understanding not only what to do, but why you're doing it.

Building Success Together

Dog training isn't about quick fixes or expecting perfection after one session. It's about building a strong relationship, improving communication and giving both you and your dog the skills to succeed together.

The initial consultation provides the foundation for everything that follows. From there, we'll work together at a pace that's right for both you and your dog.

If you're ready to build a happier, more confident relationship with your dog, I'd love to help. Whether you're working on loose lead walking, recall, manners or unwanted behaviours, I'll create a practical plan that's designed around your individual goals.

Ready to Get Started?

Whether you've just welcomed a new puppy into your family, you're struggling with pulling on the lead, unreliable recall or everyday manners, I'd be delighted to help.

My one-to-one training sessions are tailored to you and your dog, giving you practical, easy-to-follow guidance that fits your lifestyle and training goals. Together, we'll build your dog's confidence, strengthen your relationship and make training an enjoyable experience for you both.
