Losing a pet is one of the most heartbreaking things that will ever happen to you.
Our pets are there for us through life's ups and downs. Dogs, for example, greet us at the door, make us laugh when we need it the most and become a huge part of our families. So, when they pass away the sense of loss can be overwhelming.
As a pet owner, I understand just how special that bond is. It’s the reason I decided to offer pet bereavement counselling as part of my business services.

My good girls - gone but never forgotten
I saw first-hand how difficult clients found it when their dogs passed away and I wanted the knowledge to help them, and myself, get through that painful experience.
And I’m so glad I did. If you're struggling after losing a well-loved pet, pet loss grief counselling can provide a safe, supportive space where you can talk openly about your feelings and begin to work through your grief.
Let me explain.
Your Feelings Are Valid
One of the hardest things about losing a pet is that not everyone understands the depth of the loss. You might hear comments like "it was only a dog" or "you can always get another cat" which can make you feel even more alone.
The truth is that grief after losing a pet is completely normal. Whether you've lost a dog, cat, rabbit, horse or any other cherished companion, the pain is real because the love was real.
You might feel sadness, anger, guilt, loneliness or even relief if your pet had been suffering. Sometimes these emotions can come and go unexpectedly and that's perfectly okay.
You Don't Have to Go Through It Alone
Talking about your pet and sharing your memories can be an incredibly healing experience. That’s why pet bereavement counselling can be a valuable service, offering a caring, non-judgemental environment where you can express whatever you're feeling without fear of being misunderstood or looking foolish.
Counselling can help you:
-
- Talk openly about your loss.
- Work through feelings of guilt or regret.
- Understand the grieving process.
- Find healthy ways to cope with difficult emotions.
- Honour your pet's memory.
- Feel less alone during a challenging time.
There is no timetable for grief, and there is no "right" way to feel. Everyone's journey is different.
When Grief Feels Overwhelming
For some people, the loss of a pet can affect everyday life more than they expected. You may find it difficult to concentrate, struggle to sleep or feel a huge emptiness when your usual routine is suddenly changed.
Perhaps you miss the daily walks, feeding times, cuddles on the sofa or simply having your companion nearby. These day-to-day moments often leave the biggest gaps and hurt the most.
If your grief feels overwhelming, seeking support can make a real difference. Sometimes just having someone who will listen and understand can help lighten the burden.
Helping Children Cope with Pet Loss
For many children, losing a pet is their first experience of bereavement. It can be confusing and upsetting, and they may need extra reassurance and support.
Encouraging children to talk about their feelings, draw pictures, create memory boxes or share favourite stories about their pet can help them process their emotions in a healthy way.
Keeping Their Memory Alive
Although our pets are no longer with us, the love and memories we shared remain.
Many people find comfort in creating a photo album, planting flowers in their pet's memory, keeping a favourite collar or toy, or simply sharing stories with family and friends.
There is no right or wrong way to remember your pet. What matters is finding what feels meaningful to you.
I’m Here to Support You
I know that saying goodbye to a well-loved pet is one of the hardest things pet owners will ever face. I’ve done it too many times.
The good news is, if you're struggling with grief, you don't have to face it on your own. Pet bereavement counselling offers a compassionate space where you can talk, reflect and find support when you need it.
Because every pet leaves paw prints on our hearts and every loss deserves understanding.
