3 Questions to Ask Before Choosing a Dog Walker

Choosing someone to care for your dog while you’re at work or away from home is a big decision. Your dog’s safety, happiness and individual needs should always come first.

Before booking a dog walker, here are 3 important questions to ask.

  1. How will you walk my dog?

Not all dog walking services work in the same way.

Will your dog be walked alone, with another dog, or as part of a larger group? How many dogs will be walked at once? Will they be transported in a secure vehicle? How much actual walking time will your dog receive?

There isn't one right answer for every dog. Some dogs love social walks, while others are happier with a solo or buddy walk.

The important thing is that the walking arrangement suits your individual dog.

  1. What happens if my dog doesn't cope with the walk?

A good dog walker should understand that every dog is different.

Your dog might be nervous around other dogs, easily distracted, reactive on lead, uncomfortable travelling or simply prefer a quieter walk.

Ask how the walker would handle situations such as meeting another dog, poor weather, your dog becoming stressed or your dog refusing to continue.

You want someone who will recognise when your dog needs space and put their welfare before simply completing the walk.

  1. What happens if there's an emergency?

This is an important question that is easy to overlook.

Ask what would happen if your dog became unwell or injured while out. Does the walker have your emergency contact details? Do they know which vet your dog uses? Are they insured? Do they have appropriate first-aid knowledge?

You should feel confident that your dog is in safe hands even when things don't go according to plan.

Choosing the right dog walker

The cheapest option isn't necessarily the best option — and the most expensive isn't automatically the right one either.

Look for a dog walker who takes the time to get to know your dog, understands their individual needs and communicates clearly with you.

A good first meeting should leave you feeling comfortable, informed and confident about handing over your dog's care.
