Not sure whether your puppy needs Baby Puppy or Junior Puppy classes?
Choosing a puppy class can be confusing, especially when different classes have different age ranges and names.
The good news is that both Baby Puppy and Junior Puppy classes have an important role to play – but the right choice depends on your puppy's age, experience and what you want to work on.
At Jo's Pet Services, I offer small, practical puppy classes in Worksop, with just four puppies per class. This means your puppy gets more individual attention and there is less distraction than in a large class.
So, what's the difference?
Baby Puppy Classes – Building the Foundations
Baby Puppy classes are designed for younger puppies who are just starting their training journey.
These early weeks are a great opportunity to teach your puppy the skills they will use throughout everyday life.
Rather than expecting a young puppy to know everything straight away, Baby Puppy classes focus on creating a strong foundation.
What might your puppy learn?
🐾 Responding to their name
🐾 Focus and engagement with you
🐾 Basic cues such as sit, down and stand
🐾 Learning to settle
🐾 Walking nicely on a lead
🐾 Coming back when called
🐾 Appropriate greetings
🐾 Handling and cooperation
🐾 Learning around other puppies
🐾 Building confidence in new situations
The aim isn't simply to teach your puppy a list of commands.
It's about helping you understand how puppies learn and giving you practical skills that you can use at home and out on walks.
Why choose Baby Puppy classes?
Baby Puppy classes are a great choice if:
✔️ Your puppy is 12-26 weeks old and has little or no previous training
✔️ You want to get training off to a good start
✔️ Your puppy needs to learn how to focus around distractions
✔️ You want to build confidence and good everyday habits
✔️ You'd like guidance on what to expect as your puppy grows
Starting early can help prevent small problems from becoming bigger ones later.
Junior Puppy Classes – Building on the Basics
Your puppy might have started off wonderfully...
Then suddenly, everything seems to have changed!
They are more independent, easily distracted and suddenly very interested in everything except you.
Welcome to the junior puppy stage!
Junior Puppy classes are designed for puppies who are older and ready to build on their basic training.
This isn't about starting again from scratch. It's about taking those foundations and making them work in the real world.
What might your puppy learn?
🐾 Improving focus around distractions
🐾 Developing reliable responses to cues
🐾 Improving loose-lead walking
🐾 Building recall
🐾 Learning to settle when exciting things are happening
🐾 Polite greetings
🐾 Managing excitement
🐾 Improving impulse control
🐾 Practical everyday life skills
🐾 Continuing to build confidence
The teenage stage can be challenging, but it is also a really important time for learning.
Your dog is developing physically and mentally, and the skills you reinforce now can make a huge difference as they mature.
Why choose Junior Puppy classes?
Junior Puppy classes may be the better option if:
✔️ Your puppy is older, 6-12 months
✔️ They already know some basic cues
✔️ They need more work around distractions
✔️ Their recall or lead walking needs improving
✔️ They have started testing the boundaries
✔️ You want to maintain and build on their early training
Don't assume your puppy has "grown out" of training just because they know sit!
This is often the stage when continuing training becomes even more important.
Baby Puppy or Junior Puppy – Which Should You Choose?
The simplest way to think about it is:
Baby Puppy
"Let's build the foundations."
Ideal for younger puppies 12-26 weeks who are beginning their training journey.
Junior Puppy
"Let's build on those foundations."
Ideal for older puppies 6-12 months who are ready for more challenging training and real-life distractions.
Age is important, but it isn't the only consideration.
Two puppies of exactly the same age can have completely different levels of experience.
One may already attend training classes, walk nicely on a lead and respond to their name.
Another may be starting training for the first time.
That's why I look at where your puppy is now, not just their age.
What If You're Not Sure?
If you're unsure which class is right for your puppy, get in touch before booking.
I'd rather help you choose the right class than have you book a class that isn't the best fit for your puppy.
The aim is to give your puppy the right level of challenge without overwhelming them.
Because good puppy training isn't about rushing ahead.
It's about building the right skills at the right time.
Small Classes. Practical Training. Individual Attention.
My Baby Puppy and Junior Puppy classes are kept deliberately small, with just four puppies per class.
That means fewer distractions, more opportunity for individual guidance and a calmer learning environment – particularly helpful for puppies who can find busy classes overwhelming.
Whether you're bringing home a young puppy or navigating the challenging junior stage, the right training now can make everyday life easier for both of you.
